Introspect into our gratitude
There are two aspects to building gratitude and transforming our minds. Both are necessary in order to achieve the greatest amount possible. Rather than being bitter about what we think we should or shouldn’t have or depressed about the way things are going, we can use these building blocks to transform our life into something brand new.
The first aspect, which we have mentioned already, is to simply accustom ourselves to saying thank you. We don’t realize how much we have to be thankful for until we start going down the list. 100 thank you’s is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s truly endless.
The second aspect is a deeper way of thanking G-d, and that is to bring focus and mindfulness to our gratitude. This is called hitbonenut – introspection.
Introspection is the part of gratitude that will drive away depression.
We are naturally inclined to focus on what we don’t have. It is how we were created, but our job is to fight that evil inclination. That battle is the deciding factor in how we live our lives.
G-d gives us free gifts every single day. What we are going to do is take 10 of those gifts and become mindful of what we are about to thank G-d for.
Each one of these thank you’s should have a few moments of thought and focus (each on their own level).
We will begin to see that when we think about each ‘thank you’ before we thank, we will have an amazing story or feeling about that specific thing. By doing so this way, we have just set the tone and added so much more meaning into the ‘thank you’ that is to come.
We’ve now added meaning and truth, complete with mindfulness.
This introspection builds Emunah, faith, in our hearts. It will begin transforming our minds from a negative perception to a positive one, and from depression to joy.
We will begin to see how there is so much good hidden in our every day lives and we just don’t see it.
Once we start to see it the good through this advice, we will change the pattern our brain has us set to. We will build a healthier belief system to go along and develop a natural deep sense of happiness, all along the way.
